Last night I watched the new show on TV called What Would You Do? It's based on these set up scenes where actors are carrying out unjust acts on other human beings. The cameras catch unwitting bystanders as they react to the injustices they witness. Kindof like Candid Camera meets Mean Girls. Serious issues were featured such as bigotry, harrassment and bullying, and infidelity. People seriously had trouble standing up for what is right. Many more women than men were willing to get involved and take a stand for justice. I thought it was very thought provoking. Of course I would like to think that I would stand up and say something if I witnessed a human injustice. Not to pat myself on the back, but one place I usually will stand up for the underdog is when a store clerk is being mistreated by a customer. Some people just can't stop thinking that the store clerk is some sort of indentured servant who must produce whatever this customer desires at the blink of an eye. I usually try the humorous approach first. Something like, "If they knew ahead of time I am sure they would have cleared the line out so you wouldn't have to wait!" I mean really what are we about to do that we need to harrass the busy store employee just because our schedule is overbooked. But that is just one example. There are daily injustices ocurring between humans that go overlooked. Maybe the TV show will awaken people's conciousness and encourage us to stand up for others.
Do the Right Thing!
