An Apple Pie of Convenience

Mrs. Wages Pie Filling mix
my finished pie using the Mrs. Wages mix

As some of you know, I also co-own
Gambrills General Store..   At the store, we offer a large department dedicated to kitchen arts such as canning and preserving food fresh from the garden.  On of the products we carry is Mrs. Wages Seasoning packets.  Everything from pickles, to salsa to fruit can be preserved using Mrs. Wages line of products. The ingredient list is short and the company claims it is all natural. Now, I really prefer to use whole foods when cooking and shy away from most packaged products, but I do like the seasoning flavor of Mrs. Wages mixes.

prepare fruit and three quart size canning jars
One product that I had not used was the Fruit Pie Filling mix.  So, for an Apple Pie Contest at Farm Chick Chit Chat,    I used the seasoning mix to can a few jars of apple pie filling.  My followup thoughts are that it does taste fresh.  I was able to can four quarts of filling even though the package states that it will prepare three quarts.  The jars had plenty of juicy sauce too.   And the best indicator of all, my family taste tested and gave it four thumbs up.  I only told them that I used a different recipe.   Bottom Line,  I would recommend Mrs. Wages fruit pie filling mix if you are looking for a quick easy way to can up some pie filling.

And, here are some photos of how the day progressed.  My kitchen was a disaster because I also canned 8 jars of my regular pie filling, baked the pie, made applesauce, and had to rush out to put the animals in during a bad storm and tornado warning.

I had enough apple pie filling for four quarts
I like to top my pies with fun cookie cutter shapes
For this pie, I chose my momma and baby goat shapes.
optional Fairy Tale Ending-  some one else cleaned up the mess!

Too bad this wasn't a fairy tale!  Just a very productive day.

  2. Thanks Jenny. We sell them at the store so I use them when crunched for time. I need to set up notifications on my blog so I know when people send me a comment.
